Simplify at the beginning
Sketching wireframes right away inevitably moves the focus from the UX to the UI. A user-flow-first approach directs efforts toward the UX, sets a solid base to streamline collaboration, and reduces coding efforts by eliminating redundant components.
Standing out, but how much?
Users prefer your site to function similarly to those they already use, so "copying" is often necessary. But where do we draw the line between familiarity and uniqueness? Main layout and user flow: do not reinvent the wheel. Get creative on anything else.
